In Post Independent India, some young shooting lovers under leadership of Late Shyama Charan Sanyal came forward to form a Shooting institution in this city of Serampore. With the active support of those shooting lovers like Late Ramesh chandra Dasgupta, Late Jyotiprasanna Sengupta, Late Kartick Chandra Sur, Late Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya and few others, Serampore Rifle Club established on 3rd November 1949.
In past achievements of the rifle shooters of this club are matters of glory for our state. In the field of International shooting, Late Ramesh Chandra Dasgupta of this club represented India in friendly Indo-Japan Shooting meet held in Delhi in 1953 and in Tokyo in 1956. He was also selected as one of the members of Indian shooting team in Olympic ’56 at Melbourne, Australia. Then comes Late Sobhita Chatterjee, who represented India in 39th World Shooting Championship at Wiesbaden, Germany. In the field of national shooting, she became Ladies Champion from 1961 to 1966 consecutively. Sri Parimal Chatterjee, one of the Vice Presidents of the club had earned the highest distinction by participating Olympic ’72 at Munich in Germany, Asian Shooting championship in Kualalampur ’75, Asian games ’78 in Bangkok and ’82 in Delhi. He was also an outstanding performer in National Shooting Championship Competitions and won the most prestigious “The President Republic of India Trophy” in Several years. Sri Amitabha Chatterjee, another Vice President of the Club represented India in Asian Games ’78 at Bangkok and ’82 in Delhi and Smt. Maya Roy(Saha) Participated in Asian games ’86 at Seoul, Korea. Here added that I also have been able to include my name in the list of International shooters of the club by winning medals in SAF Game and SAF Shooting Championship Competition in 1995 and 1996. Recently two youngsters of the club Miss Jayashree Das and Sri Arjun Das have enhanced the glory of this club by winning medals from different international shooting meets. The junior shooters of this club will have the advantage to see their shooting and learn from it.
The Serampore Rifle Club have been conducting a “Training Course” for boys and girls of schools and colleges since last sixty years to search talent in grassroots level and as a result of that, after completion of the course, many shooters of this club became National Champion in next time and secured job under sports quota in different government sectors. The present management committee of the club has finalized an ambitious project and offering a “future” to sports loving youngsters of the city and as such the club is undergoing drastic change in outlook and approach.
It is great pleasure to us that in the month of August 2015 we have been able to conduct Dr. Harihar Banerjee Air Weapon shooting championship in our newly constructed AC shooting range. We have planned to extend our infrastructure and facilities far more than today as it is. To complete our projects and given shape we are in acute need of financial assistance which we still lack a bit. In spite of such achievements, I think that some active support has to be given to this club immediately and unless this is done our object will be totally crippled. Lastly, I am much thankful to all well-wishers of the club, the honourable Dr. Sudipto Roy (M.L.A, Serampore), Serampore Municipality and local Police administration those who have extend their helping hands to fulfil our honest effort.
Finally, I wish you a very happy and prosperous new year ahead. Thank you.
